Is 20 really the smoking age in Japan?

I was just chatting with a friend, when we realised that it seems like the convienience store on campus is selling cigarettes to underaged people. Isn't the smoking age 20 in Japan? It seems to me like a lot of people are under the age of 20, and they are smoking here at Kansai Gaidai. Does the university condone this? Isn't it illegal to sell cigarettes to people under the age of 20? I guess money is more important than health, legal issues, or even people's lives.

Actually, some of us disscussed that last year in this class, Scott! Unfortunately, under 20 people can get tabacco easily in Japan. Even though people who are just in junior high schools can get too. However many advertisement and admonition are put tabacco package and convinience stores, it seems no body care about it. Also, clerks in convinience store are not in the situation to ask customers' ages. Because it is rude in some way, and there are possibilities that customers will get angry or something. I do not know why KGU admit to sell tobacco on campus, but like smoking area, there are many conflicts between smokers and non-smokers, always, and it seems difficult to ban smoking and selling tobacco on campus, soon. I don't smoke, and in fact I don't like it much, so I hope KGU start to think this condition.

YES! ppl above 20years old can smoke. but as Aoba said, its really easy for minors to get cigaretts. Its a child's play for them to get cigaretts in Japan!!

But in australia, it doesnt work. Theres no bending machines where under 20 can enter. I mean only clubs or pubs have bending machine and we have to show our id with photo (almost always it is passport if we are fareigners) to enter these places at night.
Also when we buy cigaretts or alcohols at grocery stores, we have to show our ID. It is even banned to drink alcohol in public(like on the road) in Australia.

I think Japan should refer to this way. They can hire security stuffs to check their id.

Also I think smoking on campus should be banned... I hate seeing people smoking, and I hate the smoke!!! If they wanna smoke, they MUST absorb all the smoke from their cigarettes!! Then others wun be bothered with the harmful smoke..ha
