type='text'>

I keep meaning to blog, and I keep thinking about blogs in my mind, but I never seem to get around to actually blogging. I wonder if my students ever actually feel like this. I think part of my problem is that I have two blogs, one for my IES class (this one) and one for my English II classes. I think I would put all the blogs together if I ever do this again.

Anyway, the thing that has been burning in my mind lately is the issue of academic freedom. I heard that another teacher here at Kansai Gaidai had been teaching the class about the Nanking Massacre and one of the studnets took an article home about the Nanking Massacre. Anyway, I guess the father of this student didn't like the article, so he complained to Kansai Gaidai that the teacher was forcing the students to study a controversial issue. To make a long story short, the university then spoke to this teacher and repremanded him for the way he was teaching the class about this issue. Needless to say, I was a little bit shocked about the entire thing. To imagine that a teacher cannot teacher any position he or she wants to teach is unfathomable to me in a university setting. If the student doesn't agree with the teacher, then the student is perfectly able to disagree with the teacher by presenting the opposing viewpoint. As I teach in my class, there are many sides to every issue,　and everyone is free to disagree with everyone else. That is the way that knowledge is created in the classroom. To be silenced, I think, is the worst thing at all.

I remember reading somewhere (John Stuart Mill, I think) that freedom of speech is absolutely necessary in a society. For example, I may be complete right, and the person I am speaking to may be completely wrong, but only through the process of dialogue can I be sure that I am right. Or perhaps I am completely wrong and the other person is completely right. I can only learn if we are all free to express our opinions. Or maybe I am half right, and the other person is half right . . . it is only through dialogue that we would be able to put our two halves together and come up with the whole truth. If the process of dialogue and understanding is not gone through, then beliefs become dogma without any reason behind them.

Additionally, if the boy's father disagreed with the Kansai Gaidai teacher, the boy's father could have explained his own position to the son, and then let the son decide what is the truth about what happened in Nanking. Forcing someone to believe something is not the way to do it.

Anyway, if this were to have happened to me, and I found the university against me having academic freedom, I would be shocked beyond words. As it is now, I am merely flabberghasted, yet, cynically not so surprised.

Well I have finally well and truly succumbed to the heat, and I am now sitting in my room with the air conditioner going at full blast. He was talking about the issues or recycling right here on campus. Last school year, there used to be a group of students that used to go around collecting paper for recycling, but I guess they all graduated, and now there is no one left to recycle our paper. As I am moving back to Canada, this issue really worried me because I have soooo much paper that I don't need anymore, and I don't know what to do with it. I guess I will have to take it myself somewhere for recycling. It's too bad that there isn't a "save the environment" club on campus here at Kansai Gaidai like there are at universities in Canada / the US, etc. You'd think the university itself would be concerned with this issue. I wonder how we could get paper to be recycled here on campus.

Is 20 really the smoking age in Japan?

I was just chatting with a friend, when we realised that it seems like the convienience store on campus is selling cigarettes to underaged people. Isn't the smoking age 20 in Japan? It seems to me like a lot of people are under the age of 20, and they are smoking here at Kansai Gaidai. Does the university condone this? Isn't it illegal to sell cigarettes to people under the age of 20? I guess money is more important than health, legal issues, or even people's lives.

I was just preparing for tomorrow's class about energy sources, and I found this really cool blog all about alternative energy: http://alt-e.blogspot.com/

There is really a lot of cool information about alternative energy sources such as wind power - check it out!

This is really a global issue, but I have been really trying hard to find an easy way to post pictures in my blogs, and I think I have found it! www.flickr.com seems to be really easy. You just have to create an account and upload your pictures, and then you can either directly blog in flickr (and it will show up in your blogger blog), or you can copy and past the information into blogger. Anyway, this is an experiment using a picture that my Mum just sent me:

Aren't they cute? My parents live on a small farm in central Alberta, and they have llamas and minature horses. The llamas are so great. They are kind of like camels with no humps, but you can raise them for their wool. Their wool makes great sweaters and socks! My parents also have tons of cats on their farm, and three dogs. I can't wait to see all the animals again soon. I miss having lots of animals around me all the time.

That's it, I have finally broken down and turned on the air conditioning in my office. I have been feeling very self-righteous lately because I wasn't using the air conditioning in my office, because I wanted to try and do something to help the environment, but just now I had a huge hissy fit because of the heat, and now I am relaxing in the air conditioned paradise that is my office. s i g h. I feel like such a big hypocrite. First the disaster with my milk cartons (I forgot to wash them out, and they got all moldy and stinky so that I couldn't recyle them), and now I am using the air conditioning. Would they be offended, embarrassed, angry, rude? First of all, they'd probably think that I was just some crazy gaijin and ignore whatever I gave them. On the other hand, it would be a good example of "civil society". Me acting for the better of all rather than waiting for the government to do something.

Anyway, I'm just waiting for my Japanese teacher to come over. I study Japanese every Wednesday afternoon. It's been a lot of fun, but I never did learn how to speak Japanese. It's such a shame. I will have been here for two years, but I never learned the language. It funny, because I learned Hebrew in about six months, and it seems like I learned French in just six weeks when I was a kid. However, I sure am going to be an expert when I go back home and I eat in sushi shops! I know how to say all of the fish :-)

<img border='0' style='border:1px solid #000000; That's right, it's smoking. Japan has just signed an internation agreement to lower the rates of smoking in Japan, and they are going to introduce such measures as ID cards for vending machines, so that is a step in the right direction. However, I think that the efforts to reduce smoking in Japan are going to be quite an uphill battle. For one thing, I read in the paper that something like 25% of all doctors and nurses smoke in Japan, this is compared to 3% in the west. I wonder why there is such a difference. If your doctor smokes, how likely is it that he is going to recommend that you quite smoking? I think the key is to raise the price of cigarettes sky high, ban all public smoking, and make it completely illegal for minors to smoke. Plus, all tobacco advertising should be banned, and graphic warnings should be put on packs of cigarettes. This isn't just a matter of personal choice. Second hand smoke causes cancer. People who smoke are killing the other people around them.

There . . . that's my two cents.

Aichi Expo 2005

Hey Everyone, I just went to the Aichi Expo 2005, and it was amazing! I am so exhasted today. I went on Saturday, only for one day. If anyone is interested in what I did at expo, they can check out my other blog (www.kansaigaidaienglishtwo.blogspot.com), but basically, here, I just want to talk about what impressed me the most about expo. I was so impressed with the garbage! One of the themes of this years expo is all about the environment, and because of that, all garbage must be totally separated before you throw it away. This is such a great idea. After I had eaten lunch, I had to separate all of the plastic containers, wooden chopsticks, drink cups, plastic bags, and burnable garbage into separate garbage cans. It was a really efficient system, because all of the garbage cans were clearly labled, so that you could know where to put what garbage. What warmed my heart the most was that everyone was separating their garbage, even though it took longer to thow away your garbage. It was nice to see how willing everyone was to recycle and organize their garbage when there were clearly labled garbage cans available to do so. I wish we had garbage cans like that all over the place. I think the expo should be really proud of the way that they are handling garbage . . . now if only they hadn't cut down all those trees to build the expo in the first place, but that's another story.

I now realise that I should have made one blog for all my classes, because I wrote all about my Golden Week holiday in my other blog and now I don't want to repeat myself! That means, if anyone is curious about what I did this past week, they're going to have to check out my other blog.

After 20 Years, Whale Returns to Wakayama School Lunches

Anyway, I guess this is supposed to be my serious blog where I tackle global issues. You know, I felt my blood pressure rising again this morning while I was reading the paper. The lastest thing to disturb me is the matter of serving whale meat in school lunches:
I guess it saddens me that there are people in the world that think it is necessary to kill whales for food, when there are other perfectly good alternative protein sources. Those in favour of eating whale argue that it is part of Japanese culture, and that the international ban on whaling is disrespectful of Japanese culture. The point is though, that culture changes. It was once the culture in my country to wear fur, shoot native people, hang criminals, put homosexuals in jail, pay women less pay for equal work, and denie women the vote . . . but things change. I am not even pointing this out from a position of righteousness as Canada continues to do such barbaric things as club baby seals to death every year. The point is that things can change. The baby seal fur trade will end when enough people realise the cruelty and pointlessness of it, just as hunting whales is not necessary. Contrary to some Japanese goverment figures, whale populations are not thriving. They are in danger. Once they whales are gone, they won't be coming back. Now is the time to do something about it before it is too late.

My computer at work is totally infected with viruses! It's so frustrating, because now, I don't have any internet access in my office, because my computer won't work on the internet anymore. The Kansai Gaidai mail server is totally infected with viruses. I wish they would hurry up and fix it. I wonder when I'm going to have the internet in my office again. I never realised how dependent I was on the internet. I use it so much for my work. Whenever I want to get an article or check on some facts, I just turn to the internet, and I expect it to be instantly available to satisfy my needs. It's amazing how much the world has changed in less than 10 years. In the old days, you had to go to a library to find out information - now it is at our fingertips. Unless of course you are me, and your computer has crashed big time because of viruses.

However, eventhough I have lots of viruses at work, I can still use my computer at home. Hmmmm, maybe this is a good thing because now I have a good excuse to always go home early :-)

I just saw a very interesting article on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) website called "Hating Japan"

http://www.cbc.ca/news/viewpoint/vp_yu/20050411.html

If you agree, disagree, or just want to make a comment, click on "send a comment" near the bottom of the article, and the CBC might publish your comments on their website. Whenever I don't feel like doing any work, the first thing I always do is check out my blog. Blogging is so great because I can feel like I am working, when I am actually enjoying myself too!

I just bought a new BBQ! I can't wait to try it out. I think the first thing I am going to make is barbecued chicken wings. My BBQ was really cheap, and I noticed that it was made in China. It seems like everything is made in China nowadays. I just hope that it wasn't made by slave labour. I always feel a pang of guilt whenever I buy anything from China because each time I buy something from China I think about Tibet, or human rights abuses, or people who are paid slave wages in clothing sweatshops. The problem is that I keep on buying stuff. But on the other hand, I don't think there were any Japanese made BBQ's in the store, and there certainly weren't any Canadian BBQ's there.

I have been thinking about China a lot lately. There was a lot in the news today about the anti-Japanese protests in China this weekend. It's front page news in the Canadian newspapers (www.globeandmail.com). I wonder what my IES students think about the protests in China. Actually, right now I am in the computer lab with my IES students. We are all blogging about our goals for this semester. This is the last time that I am ever going to tell my students what to blog about! From now on, everyone can choose their own topics, but I thought it would be cool for us to see what everyone really wants to do this semester. As for me, I guess I have a few goals. One thing I'd really like to do is finish the textbook in just one semester. We are reading the textbook Global Issues: An Introduction. Last year my class and I took two semesters to read this book, but, as you know, I am moving back to Canada in August, so I want to finish the book before I go back to Canada! Anyway, that is my first goal. My second goal is for everyone to really start thinking about global issues, and to use the blogs as a safe place where they can talk about their opinions without having to worry about stuff like grammar, spelling, vocabulary, etc. I can't wait to read what my students have to say about global issues, and I look forward to making comments on my students' blogs. I hope some of the students make comments on my blog too!

Hmmmm, what other goals do I have . . . I guess I will see what my students goals are first, because another one of my goals it to help my students' fullfill their goals.

Later!

Welcome to Global Issues at Kansai Gaidai!

Hello world!

Welcome to the "Introduction to Global Issues" course at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka Japan.
